Blake pledged his 37th birthday to raise money for clean water projects in India this year.
He's the founder and Chief Shoe Giver of TOMS and has been a friend to Scott Harrison since the early days. Blake has supported us both personally and professionally. Our partnership with TOMS began in 2010, when they created two series of limited-edition water project shoes and helped fund three wells in Ethiopia. They were also a presenting partner of the 2012 charity: ball Waterwalk, bringing clean water to over 19,000 people in India -- which serves as a precursor to the April launch of the first-ever, limited-edition charity: water eyewear.
BLAKE'S TAKE ON BIRTHDAYS:
Why did you decide to pledge your birthday for clean water? I've been a great supporter of Scott and charity: water for the past 7 years and was excited to take this challenge to help bring clean water to those who really need it.
How seriously do you embrace the spotlight on your birthday? Not too seriously… I'm not a "big party" type of guy.
Name your top three mandatory birthday treats/indulgences. A really relaxing round of golf with the guys. Dinner with my wife and close friends and family. Good wine.
Which birthday do you remember looking forward to most -- and why? It would have to be my 30th birthday on a friend's boat. I had all my favorite people in the world with me. It also seemed like a major rite of passage at the time, moving out of my 20s and into my 30s.
Most embarrassing birthday wish you've ever made? On my 30th birthday mentioned above, we just started TOMS and I wished that our next shipment of shoes from the factory would come without any major malfunctions. :)
Best birthday surprise you've ever received? One birthday all my friends and family surprised me at a friend's house when I thought I was just going over there for dinner with a few people. Surprise parties are the best because you're not involved in any of the work of planning but get to enjoy all the fun!
What birthday gift did you ask for and never receive? A go kart.
