WE TOLD THE PEOPLE OF MOALE WE’D COME BACK.
September Campaign 2010 was a success. We raised our goal of $1.7 million to provide clean water for all the Bayaka people living in Central African Republic (C.A.R.). There was only one failure: the Live Drill on our fourth birthday from the village of Moale, deep in the rainforest of C.A.R. We were unable to reach water, but promised we’d be back. On July 20th, 2011, we fulfilled our promise and finished a clean water well in Moale. Watch the video to see what happened.

SEPTEMBER CAMPAIGN 2010. SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Four Septembers ago, we had a crazy idea: we asked our friends to give up their birthdays and ask for donations instead of gifts. We used 100% of the money raised to build water projects in developing countries. Every September since, we've done it again.

In September 2010, we raised $1,091,138 through mycharity: water individual fundraising campaigns. With the help of East Lake Church, supporters at charity: ball, and other incredible donors, we reached our fundraising goal of $1.7 million to provide every Bayaka in Central African Republic with access to clean water. WHO ARE THE BAYAKA?

The Bayaka are an African Pygmy tribe. They were one of the last hunter-gatherer societies in the world until the logging industry pushed them out of the forest. Now, they’re learning to live on the outskirts of villages, where they face rejection and abuse by locals who see them as animals who belong in the jungle. Many Bayaka live without clean water in southern C.A.R. We want to bring clean and safe drinking water to every one of them.

WHAT’S THE SEPTEMBER CAMPAIGN?

charity: water started with a birthday party. When founder Scott Harrison turned 31, he asked everyone he knew to come to a party and bring money for clean water instead of gifts. He raised more than $15,000 and we used the money to give water to people living in a refugee camp in Uganda. In 2007 we did it again, but asked others born in September to join in as well. They gave up birthday gifts and together we raised $150,000 to bring clean water to hospitals and schools in Kenya. A year later, 900 people joined the movement, and almost $1 million was raised through birthdays. This year, we’re doing it again -- but bigger. We hope to bring clean and safe drinking water to a forgotten people in a forgotten nation: the Bayaka in Central African Republic. The 210 water projects that will serve 90,000 people will cost $1.7 million -- an ambitious goal, but one we can reach with your help.
